Environment protection

Environment protection

Polska Żegluga Bałtycka S.A. is one of the ferry leading operators on the Baltic Sea.

The purpose of the Company is to lead to transformation into a balanced system of transport co-establishing world of mobility, which is better for the environment, commune and business.

Polska Żegluga Bałtycka S.A. undertakes to observe all rules in the field of environment, human rights, employees rights and combat with a corruption as a holistic attitude to the issue of balanced transport. Our balanced transport solutions are prepared in a close cooperation with our clients and other shareholders and are based on three pillars – an energetic effectiveness, using the most effective technologies in connection with services focusing on drive system effectiveness and optimization of fuel consumption.

In all what we do either externally or internally, we try to optimize flow of assets and initiate for effective management of them.

Fit for 55

Fit for 55

We put a huge effort on energetic effectiveness and a carbon footprint decrease in our activity. We support transmission into a society of low emission by responsible power generation and gradual retreat from fossil fuels. In order to meet requirements of a legal packet “Fit for 55” we plan to decrease an emission of greenhouse gases emitted by ferries with a percentage values: 2% do 2025, 6% to 2030, 15% to 2035, 25% to 2040, 60% to 2045. Our purpose is a policy consistent with assumptions of European Green Order and achieving neutrality towards emission of CO2 to 2050.

Our tonnage investments include constructions of new crafts powered by ecologic LNG fuel. These ferries will have a long, 4-kilometer loading line. They will be powered by azimuth thrusters powered by hybrid drive with a high energetic effectiveness. Thanks to it, there will be able to achieve proportionally low EEXI and CII factors connected with the newest regulations referred to in the convention on preventing from the sea and air contamination by ships – MARPOL Edition 2017 Attachment no. VI. We permanently observe the MRV factors of each ferry (on the basis of the Regulation EU 2015/757) connected with a consumption of fuel, amount of transported shipment or CO2 concentration emitted to the air.

Except high quality fuel used, we optimize exploitation speeds and we take care of a proper hull security, which have an influence on a fuel consumption, thereby the CO2 emission.  A speed adjustment and technical innovations decrease consumption of fuel and emission of harmful compounds, simultaneously lowering a noise and vibration influence on the environment and increasing comfort of passengers. Two of our ferries use a port power system working in the “coldironing” while staying in ports in Sweden and all our ferries, while being in a dock will take energy, within the frames of the electric energy supply from a land until 2030. Thinking of decreasing an energy consumption  we start using save-energy LED lamps. Dishwashers in restaurants save water and cookers have been substituted with induction plate, what also decrease energy and minimize an off-heat generation.

Waste management

In a safe and responsible manner we manage the waste and sewage generated  both on our sailing units and on the land. In order to protect the sea waters, on all our ferries we use effective systems of purifying and treatment of ballast waters (BWTS) in accordance with the latest requirements of the BWM convention on ballast waters. The waste and all other waste which is created as a result of exploitation of the units is segregated in accordance with the applicable requirements and regularly given to the ports to which the ferries arrive (we do not pollute see waters therewith).

Partnership is of key meaning for the transformation of the ecosystem of transport and logistics. Poska Żegluga Bałtycka cooperates in this respect with the community, deciding entities and our clients. Our goal is to contribute to the development of the economy with closed loop and reduce the amount of the waste generated by us with simultaneous minimizing our influence on the environment.
