ETS surcharge (European Emission Trading Scheme) results from the inclusion of the shipping sector in the EU CO₂ emissions trading system. Its amount depends on the average monthly quotations of emission allowances and the emission levels generated by the vessels operating on individual routes.
The ETS surcharge is charged for each commenced meter of vehicle length and applies to freight units. The surcharge amount is determined on the basis of current market quotations for CO₂ emission allowances.
