The ETS surcharge (European Emission Trading Scheme) results from the inclusion of the maritime transport sector in the European Union’s CO₂ emissions trading system. Its amount depends on the average monthly price of emission allowances and the level of emissions generated by vessels operating on individual routes.
The ETS surcharge is calculated for each commenced metre of vehicle length and applies to freight vehicles. The surcharge amount is determined based on the current market price of CO₂ emission allowances.
