Świnoujście

Świnoujście

Świnoujście is the city farthest to the west in Poland with a seaport, gas terminal and bathing area. It is located on the coast in the West Pomeranian Voivodeship and borders Germany to the west.

The city also has the status of a health resort. Świnoujście has a population of over 40,000. Due to its location by the sea and vicinity to the state border, it is a very attractive tourist and health resort. Below we present the 10 most interesting attractions in Świnoujście and its neighborhood. The order of the places is random.

The city beach in Świnoujście

The city beach in Świnoujście

When there is a sea, there must be a beach. A must! In addition to the sand, we have a great view to admire the ships arriving at and departing from the port or gas terminal. You can also go on a long coastal walk to Germany. As a rule, the beach is cleaned frequently in high season, so it is not very littered. In addition, you can find a lot of nice, undamaged shells, which you can take with you as a souvenir from hollidays.

The Promenade

Similarly to the nearby Międzyzdroje, there is also a promenade in Świnoujście. Only that there is no alley of fame as in Międzyzdroje, which means that there are fewer people here. Therefore, on the promenade in Świnoujście, we have a much smaller crowd and larger space. Along the promenade, there are many restaurants as well as catering and service outlets. In addition, in high season, we often encounter some smaller events - e.g. mini-concerts. A highly recommended place for a family walk with on a sunny holiday day.

The Swinoujscie Lighthouse (Latarnia Morska Świnoujście)

The Swinoujscie Lighthouse (Latarnia Morska Świnoujście)

If we have a city, sea and port, there must be a lighthouse. That is why there is also one in Świnoujście. It is the highest lighthouse on the Baltic Sea. Its height is 68 meters. To enter the observation deck, over 300 steps have to be climbed. It was built in 1858. In the area of the lighthouse, there is a permanent exhibition devoted to lighthouses and sea rescue in general.

West Artillery Fort (Zachodni Fort Artyleryjski)

The fort was built in the years 1843 - 1863. Since then, it has been expanded and modernized many times. After the end of World War II, Soviet troops were stationed here until 1962. It was built by the Prussians to protect the seaport. A very large area for sightseeing, recommended with the whole family, although due to the terrain conditions it is better to avoid driving a pram.

The Underground City on the Wolin Island

The Underground City on the Wolin Island

It is located between the beach and the Świnoujście-Przytór railway station. Therefore, there is no problem with reaching this interesting and attractive place. The present buildings are mostly a remnant of the German coastal artillery (1939-1945). After World War II, from 1945 to 2013, it housed the Backup Command Post of the higher military authorities of the Polish army. It was also the seat of the commander of the 8th Coast Guard Flotilla. From December 31, 2013, i.e. quite recently, the facility was handed over to the Coastal Defense Museum in Świnoujście (Muzeum Obrony Wybrzeża w Świnoujściu) and made available for tourists as an attraction.

Breakwaters and the Stawa Młyny

They were built at the beginning of the 19th century together with the Stawa Młyny, which served (and still does) as a navigation sign. It is interesting that this sign is made in the shape of a windmill and its length into the Baltic Sea is over 1,400 meters.

Spa Park (Park Zdrojowy) in Świnoujście

Spa Park (Park Zdrojowy) in Świnoujście

As Świnoujście has the status of a health resort, we can find a spa park there. It was built in the nineteenth century by design of Peter Joseph Lene, who was the designer of, among others, royal gardens in Potsdam and Berlin. Most of the vegetation that we find there comes from the Mediterranean basin. In the center of the park you will find a tree that is over 150 years old. The omnipresent green will impress everyone. So it is worth going for a walk in the spa park for your well-being.
